Read Your Heart Out

For many readers, the Goodreads Reading Challenge is a great way to make a dent in our never ending "To Be Read" (TBR) piles. 

How does it work? At the start of the year, Goodreads invites its members to pledge a certain number of books they think they are able to read for the year. Each book marked "Finished" on the site or the app, counts as a pledge towards your goal. It is neither a race nor a contest, but a way to challenge you to increase the number or the quality of books you've read in your lifetime.

I began this adventure back in 2011 when I discovered Goodreads as a tool to help catalog all the books I've read. Up until then, I was actually jotting down the titles on various notebooks I had strewn across the house and kept a running tally in an MS Excel file which I still maintain after all this time. This masterlist has survived 3 versions of Windows (XP, XE, Vista), 4 crashed hard drives, a migration to iOS, and a move across the globe. (yikes!)

While I would normally set my goal for about 100 books per year, I decided to take it easy and settle with reading just 60 books. This way, it would help me concentrate on other things like being a devoted wife to my wonderful husband, keeping house (or learning to, anyway) and nurturing a love for cooking. I've perfected the first, working hard on the second and all but abandoned the third.
